Vishaan Chakrabarti is Marc Holliday Associate Professor of Real Estate Development at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, Columbia University. Prior to joining Columbia, he was an Executive Vice President at the Related Companies and served as the Director of the Manhattan Office for the New York Department of City Planning from 2002-2005. He joined SHoP Architects as a Principal in 2012. He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master of City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and dual Bachelor degrees in Art History and Engineering from Cornell University. His book, A Culture of Cities: a manifesto for an urban America (New York: Metropolis) was published in 2013.
Professor Chakrabarti defines hyperdensity as ‘density sufficient to support subways.’ In the 2014 Reid Lecture he will lay out the factors that impede hyperdensity in our cities today, and the conditions necessary to create hyperdense environments in the future.
The 2014 Reid Lecture will be followed by the opening of the annual exhibition of the UNSW Master of Urban Development & Design Program, BE Gallery, Red Centre West Wing:
